Finished Dear Hongnang (2025). This is a historical mystery / romance about a man claiming to be the lost son of wealthy trader family and the consequences of his return. It is a pretty high budget and atmospheric show with some smart writting regarding the machinations of different factions, yet I was not able to get fully on-board with the characters and the story, despite both aspects having some fine moments. Slightly above average experience, with fun OST.

The show actually does pretty good job at presenting hints to him being and not being imposter. The early episode when they try to trick him into drinking wine that he is supposedly allergic to is great. But they don't dwell on it for too long. The audience learns the truth few episodes in, but many characters don't and it is neat how they can utilize the information for their goals. There is a lot of lies in the show and saying what you know to be false can hurt you in some ways while gaining leverage in others. The show has more mysteries though.
I may when I am in a mood for such 2000s film. Thinking Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind may be next (just not in the schedule now).

Watched Dead Zone (1983). A very cool mystery/thriller movie about a teacher who spends 5 years in a coma following a car accident. When he awakes, he realizes he can see past and future of others. While he is trying to reconcile with his new curse/gift, he needs to come to terms of his girlfriend already moving further in life and he is slowly getting entangled into crime and political cases.
Very cool atmospheric movie. Despite having overaching plot, the movie feels kinda episodic which likely is a result of cramming King's novel into 100 minute long film. Characters are well-realized but probably limited by the run time. I would be interested in picking up the book. If the characters are fleshed out like in Pet Sementary, this must be absolute banger of a book.

Most movies are not scary. Most movies are designed for you to feel positive emotions, even horror to explore dangerous situations in safe space. That is why it is so impressive when move sets out to actually make you feel negative feelings.
The Shining is prime example. Never seen a movie that just feels so wrong and kinda evil in itself. Another is Fire Walk With Me. Never felt so dirty after watching a film.

Watched The Machinist (2004). Amazing psychological horror starring Christian Bale. Gotta give credit to his decication to the role, the entire movie he looks like he has just crawled out of the crackden and is about to collapse any day now, neatly reflecting the psychological state of the protagonist. Slow burn storytelling manages to create suspenseful atmosphere and almost never get the horror in your face. Everything is just reality being slightly off and strange, things occuring slowly making less sense. The initially friendly but odd bold guy makes a great impression, being the constant menacing presence in the film and serving as a foil for the protagonist.

Finished Alice in Borderland Season 3 (2025). A bit of a step down from the original two series (which supposedly covered the whole manga) but still great deal of fun. I like how they acknowledge the passage of time between the seasons and we see
Arisu and Usagiliving as a cute married couple. The reason for returning to the Realm is initially intriguing yet it does get kinda muddled as the show goes on. The games are fun, although the season would probably benefited by having standard 8 episodes instead of three, to make them more detailed and to flesh out new characters. This is however mitigated as the sidecharacters get their spotlight in the final game, although could have been more of a focus earlier. The ending is solid, although the pessimist in me believes they are hinting at sigh American spin off.
The worst thing about the War is that it is an absolute slog. The final stretch is better but that part where it is just nobodies fighting nobodies is terribly boring.
Bleach has a lot of this and always managed to make the fights at least somewhat interesting or cool.
I hate the reanimate old baddies part, but I think the whole strategic aspect was kinda cool. also the five kage summit was interesting af and well themed imo with the snowy theme and the samurais etc.
