Watched Groundhog Day (1993). This is a comedy starring Bill Murray about a cynical reporter who goes to shoot a coverage of local event and ends up being stuck in the timeloop. Pretty funny film and I appreciate how the main character develops - from just messing around through feeling hopeless and depressed to establishing relationships and growing as a person. The main female character is pretty good too, and they nicely bounce off each other with Murray. The movie has comfy wintery small town atmosphere which makes it a good watch for winter months just like Little Forest.

Finished the sixth season of Burn Notice (2012). This is quite a departure from the tradional format as the show truly becomes serious this season, while still having a couple of more light-hearted episodes. The stakes are higher than ever and the show goes into territories I thought it would never cross into. The status quo is also broken. Quite enjoyable and thrilling season, with occassional emotional moments, even that Loft scene. This time even the morals of main characters get tested. The bad guys are really good, although I think it burned through them a bit too quickly but it still lead to an interesting new type of storyline.

One day, her company gets a request from a foreign woman to shoot a substitute travel show for her. As such, Gong embarks on her first journey alone, learning to enjoy travelling instead of it being a stressful job and reflects on her life. This is a very comfy show, inspired by the Japanese healing iyashikei genre, which shows you lesser known parts of Korea and even ventures to Japan. Gong's character is pretty strong and slowly grows from her experiences and interactions with those she encounters, often reminiscing on the nature of her career in the entertainment industry. The rest of the cast from her agency is also good, providing plenty of funny interactions, the highlight being the CEO played by Yu Jun Sang, who on one hand is the sweet father figure, while on the other being absolutely goofball providing the most hilarious scenes. All of them slowly progressing through hardships, the show has surprisingly emotional climax. I have seen there are talks about season 2 which I would definitely welcome.

Watched A Better Tomorrow 2 (1987). This is a sequel to famous John Woo action crime movie where the two brothers on opposite sides of law are reunited to investigate a money counterfeiting case. While the original was one of the best Hong Kong movies I watched, this one was pretty dissapointing. The story is just too all over the place for big chunk of the movie. The characters act strangely, especially the younger brother, making so really bad decisions. The music is good and a handful of action scenes too, but it is not sufficient. I kinda liked how they made Chow Yun Fat to play brother of the character from the first movie, they established him quite well but then as the plot proceeds, he just keeps larping more and more as his brother because he is so cool. It is really silly, but the cynical self-awareness of the situation is kinda charming.

This year I am planning to watch some anime classics. Finished Haibane Renmei (2002). A mystery story about a girl who is born into an old-timey walled-off city as an haibane, an angel-like being. Initially, the show is primary slice of life that allows you to observe the world and get familiar with the characters. After the first episode, the show is kinda slow and the characters are not that interesting yet but it lays out important groundwork. Halfway though, the tone shifts and the series is much more focused on world-building and the mystery. Some characters get way more interesting. The show also starts having this melancholic and existentionalist vibe. It becomes quite captivating. The music is also strong. Easy to see why this is still considered a classic today.

It has been almost a year since I watched Drawing Closer so I decided to watch The Last 10 Years (2022) today. This is a dramatic romantic film about 20 year old girl who is diagnosed with a terminal lung disease with 10-year life expectancy at best. After 2 years, she is released from hospital and tries to do something with her life as she had potential as a writer. She attend a school reunion, where she meets her former classmate who is spiralling as he couldn't withstand the pressure of taking over his family's business. The movie then chronicles their lives as friends and lovers while her condition worsen. Very well-made emotional film. I really liked the main characters, with great performances by Nana Komatsu (one of the best Japanese actresses) and Kentaro Sakaguchi. The side characters nicely compliment the story, with a nice smaller role played by Lily Franky, also glad to see that guy. The movie excells in the atmosphere, capturing simple moments of everyday life and small meaningful character interactions and bonds with a great deal of melancholy as characters struggle with one's mortality. Atmosphere is greatly boosted by beautiful portrayal of Japan. When given chance, the romance is charming but often appropriately undercut by the impending sense of unavoidable. I really enjoyed this tragic film, yet it didn't match Drawing Closer as that movie really just stacks up gut punches to the viewer.
