I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. I use FreeBSD for my file server (because ZFS).
what do you mean? it's code that has been liberated from corporate ownership
it usually means (roughly) you can't use modify source code without showing it to the others (i.e. GPL license)

tbh XFS is usually great for media files, no need to use less popular systems unless you really need it (different network stack, vfs architecture, etc)
