Watched Golden Kamuy 2 (2024), a jdrama follow up to the movie, where the hunt for prisoners with tattoos that reveal a secret gold treasure continues. I am happy to say the transition to TV screen has not hurt the series one bit, production values are still top notch as well as the fight choreography. The serialized format gives much more room for teased side characters to be developed and it is quite an funny unhinged ensemble. The show is structed into mostly episodic stories that blend into each other but it gives each one a distinct identity, throwing characters in variety of creative scenarios - eg. dealing with an honourable bear hunter or gay serial killer hiding among fisherman, spending night in mazey murder hotel, getting lured into fake Ainu village captured by escaped criminals or infiltrating army headquarters. Usually, an extra enemy from unrelated party gets involved throwing further curveball into the plot. Given the success of the original movie, I believe the creators got more confident and decided to fully lean into wonderful craziness of the manga that sometimes you feel a bit like watching Jojo or a weird creative slasher flick with its own bizarre lore. Well, they also give author a lot of room to make a lot of "no homo" jokes, which he seems to be quite fond of. Overall, this is one of the best live action manga adaptations. It read it skips minor arcs but it feels completely natural, which gives it upper hand over One Piece, which is great but it feels so tense in its pacing as it is trying to stick everything into so few episodes.
