No, there was plenty of good stuff out there, just wasn't shoved into your face because most of the good brands have barely any marketing.
Not saying it isn't. But its success is mostly down to becoming a cultural thing, rather than being a vastly superior revolutionary product

I was mad at the trash mp3 player of mine so I bought a phone that was specifically marketed for music
